As restrictions change and start to ease in various locations, R31 finds itself busy with multiple new projects while to screen long our older ones that continue to still garner awards and accolades.

We begin with The Satanic Panic and the Religious Battle for the Imagination – a film currently in production that will stir up memories of a time where a kids game became the target for all kinds of parent groups, pseudo-psychologists and religious authorities. R31 has already filmed all kinds of unique subjects to speak on this topic, including the Revd. Derek White and artist Larry Elmore of Dungeons & Dragons fame. Currently traveling throughout North America from Texas to Wisconsin, Los Angeles to Regina, production will wrap in October and head into post with a spring delivery.

In the meantime, our examination of the Mennonites that moved to Mexico in the 1920’s (currently titled Conform) moves into post production. This fascinating story looks at the various Mennonite groups in Manitoba and Saskatchewan that battled the provincial governments over the right to control their own schools almost a hundred years ago.

This film is being produced in association with The Plett Foundation and continues a line of Mennonite documentaries that R31 has produced over the years.

Speaking of Mennonite documentaries…

The Last Objectors, a hugely successful film that has screened around the world, won many awards and is now curriculum at many universities and colleges, is part of the Mennonites at War speaker series put together by the Mennonite Heritage Village in Steinbach, Manitoba. The film will have an online screening and Q&A with director Andrew Wall on September 14th. It’s free to attend (virtually) and should be a fascinating discussion.

Finally, our film Boom that we are so proud of has not only been selected for the Canada’s Yes! Let’s Make a Movie Film Festival but also been nominated for its Best Documentary award. It will also be screening at the Eau Claire International Film Festival in St Paul Minnesota in early October. We are so honoured to be able to tell the Keira Bond story with this film and looking forward to seeing more audiences learn of the inspirational young girl that made a difference in the lives of so many.

That’s it for now so stay tuned!
