It’s been a very busy fall at R31 with production travel, post production, nominations and a series of recent and upcoming screenings.

Firstly, our short film for CBC, Boom: The Keira Bond Story, was recently made an official selection at the Sport Film Festival of Rotterdam. The festival takes place Dec 7 and this will be a European premiere for the mini-documentary which follows the inspirational story of the young ringette player, Keira Bond. R31 is honoured and delighted to continue to share this story with audiences around the world.

Despite premiering in early 2019, Volendam: A Refugee Story continues to screen throughout Canada and the world at film festivals, colleges, historical organizations and beyond. Garnering many awards and accolades, the documentary recently was made an official selection at the North Dakota Human Rights Film Festival & Summit. The festival runs Nov 2-18 in Fargo, North Dakota, and while the film explores the Soviet-Mennonite refugees of the Second World War it tells a universal story that is still relevant today.

“We’re extremely excited by the festival,” said Sean Coffman, Executive Director of the Human Family and Festival Director of the 2021 North Dakota Human Rights Film Festival. “The films screening this year speak profoundly to important issues currently being discussed in our communities.”

The tv-half hour documentary made for CBC, Eagle & Hawk Take the Stage, was not only recently selected and nominated for Best Short Documentary by the World Music & Independent Film Festival but also nominated directors Andrew Wall and Vince Fontaine for best Director in Documentary. The awards event to take place March 8, 2022 in Jeffersonton, VA. Eagle & Hawk Take the Stage has aired numerous times coast to coast in Canada and R31 is honoured to continue to be recognized for it.

Finally, work on R31’s Satanic Panic and the Religious Battle for the Imagination continues. A recent trip to Gamehole Con in Madison, Wisconsin garnered many great interviews including numerous former TSR Hobbies (the company that originally produced Dungeons & Dragons), author John Peterson and Luke Gygax. Now entering into post production, the film is scheduled to broadcast in 2022 on Superchannel in Canada and is sure to bring a unique take on not just the “satanic panic” of the 80’s but the larger issues of misinformation and conspiracy that we still face today.

That’s it for now. Stay tuned for more updates…
